Elementary School Essay Writers Recognized

The K-12 Task Force of AGHE, in partnership with the Institute on Aging at Portland State University, hosted a special event at this year's annual meeting that recognized the winners of an essay contest for 4th and 5th grade students in the Portland Public Schools. Teachers were invited to participate by encouraging students to submit essays about grandparents or other older adults who have been inspirational and who have made differences in the lives of the students. A reading committee made up of K-12 Task Force members selected the final winning essays. Essay writers and their honorees were recognized at a special reception on Saturday, March 3, 2007.

The winners read their essays to a full room of teachers, grandparents, and AGHE meeting attendees. Below is a link to an article that was run in The Oregonian on March 8, 2007.
