Environmental Design Committee Mission

Purpose:  The primary purpose of the AGHE Environmental Design Committee is to inform and educate the AGHE membership, through workshops and/or educational sessions, about the emerging field of Aging Environmental Design. The secondary purpose, which is congruent with our primary purpose, is to develop, promote and facilitate basic core competency standards and curricula in environmental design for older adults.  These basic core competencies can serve as guidelines for awarding the AGHE Program of Merit (POM) to educational programs in those disciplines that prepare professionals to work with older adults. Application of Gerontology/Geriatric expertise will address the “impact of the environment on health, participation, and security in order to enhance quality of life as one ages” [World Health Organization, (2002). Active ageing: A policy framework. Geneva, Switzerland: World Health Organization (WHO)].
