IMAGINING | PREPARING | REMOVING BARRIERS

The abstract submission site is now closed. Notification messages will be sent to primary authors/Chairs in October.

This year is a particularly important one for AGHE. We anticipate continuing growth (our membership increased by seven percent last year). We will be renewing and building on our mission of providing global leadership in gerontology education. Now is the time for vision; for exercising true leadership in promoting gerontology education as a key component of core curricula for all students; for ensuring quality training for health and service professionals; and for educating a generation of gerontology scholars and researchers whose contributions will improve the quality of late life. Now is the time for imagination.

The theme for the 2011 meeting will be “Living the Old Age We Imagine: Higher Education in an Aging Society.” Henry David Thoreau urged each person to “Live the life you have imagined.” Too often we are constrained from accomplishment and living as we would wish by our own reluctance to pursue our dreams and aspirations. At the Cincinnati conference, we will translate this sentiment into visions of AGHE’s future as an educational leader in enabling people to live an old age they have imagined within a society in which everything is done to make this possible. Our envisioning will center on three interlocking sub-themes: imagining an old age worth living; preparing for the old age we imagine; and removing barriers to living the old age we imagine. Too many people never have the opportunity to live the old age they have imagined. These themes will be explored through seven substantive conference tracks. I encourage you to consider making a contribution to one of them.
